BLURB
Working for the FBI certainly isn’t a “normal” job, but Special Agent Julie Ann Davidson has never encountered a case as personal as this one. Although not officially assigned to the case, Ann and her partner, Patrick Duncan, take up the cause of finding Rachel, Jason, and Emily Collins. As if that task wasn’t enough, Ann and Patrick also have a baffling case of internet thievery to investigate.
Who is Christopher Collins and what about his past is endangering his family? Where are Rachel and the kids being held? Where is God in the midst of chaos? Will Ann and Patrick arrive in time or will they find only pain?
EXCERPT
After work on Thursday, Rachel Collins stopped at the grocery store for basics and something special for dinner. Having heard many horrible stories, she didn’t dare leave the children alone in the car. Warnings about best behavior fell upon deaf ears. Somewhere, she found the patience to tolerate Jason and Emily’s childish antics.
“Why you frown, Mommy?” Jason asked.
“I’m just tired, Jay,” replied Rachel. Her mind took a trip back to the office where a thousand little things had gone wrong. The secretary’s morning car accident had added considerable stress to Rachel’s hectic life. Her trust in God’s sovereignty didn’t make lousy days any easier to live through.
For years she had believed Christ to be mere church rhetoric. Finally, during a particularly rough college year, she had accepted God’s gift of salvation through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. It pained her that Chris avoided church. Come Sunday, Rachel forced a bright smile, sang in the choir, helped in the nursery, and coordinated other children’s ministries. In fact, she kept herself so busy with work, kids, and church that her spiritual walk floundered. Stress and bills were her biggest problems, but she understood that they allowed her family light, food, warmth, and a fine home in the great state of Pennsylvania. She knew the ‘could-haves’ and the ‘what-ifs’ could drive her mad so she decided not to worry about the future.
“When we get home, you need a nap,” Jason said.
Her son’s solemn suggestion drew Rachel back to the present. She chuckled softly. Children were a blessing, even if they did jump all over her nerves sometimes.
“Cookies!” Emily shouted, pointing with a tiny finger.
Annoyed at herself for wandering down the wrong aisle, Rachel winced at the volume, grabbed Emily’s wildly waving hand, and said, “Hush, sweets, I see them.”
That’s what you get for not paying attention. Oh well, the damage is done. The pantry’s nearly empty anyway.
She let them each pick a favorite and finished the hike to the back corner where the main selection of milk and eggs were located.
Ingenious to put milk in the back, Rachel admitted.
Next, they swung by the fish department where Jason made a face.
Emily covered her nose and announced, “Stinky!”
About the AuthorJulie mainly confines her writing to three genres: Christian inspirational, YA real-world science fiction, and normal science fiction.
She likes teaching, writing, reading, sleeping, doing puzzles, and hanging out with friends. (Not necessarily in that order)
Writing has made her super picky about the things she reads but normally, her reading list includes something that fits under the thriller, mystery, science fiction, or fantasy.
Occasionally, she attempts short poetry. The poems turn into songs, which she sings with abandon when nobody's looking.

Book
Excerpt
I’m downstairs.
Hurry up. The meter’s running! Z
I stared at the text
from Zach and grabbed my handbag off the counter. Jamie was in the
shower getting
ready for work so I
stuck my head into the steamfilled
room.
“I’m going now.
Have a good night.”
“Have fun!” she
said.
I ran down the
stairs and out onto the street, then climbed into the back seat of
the taxi waiting at the curb.
I settled in next to
my brother as we pulled out into the traffic.
“Hey,” I said.
Zach’s expression
was serious. “We need to talk.”
“Okay,” I said
cautiously.
It was always in the
back of my mind that Zach would find out that I didn’t actually
work in a mail room. I
was so lucky that he
hadn’t figured out that I worked for Todd yet. I was sure he knew
we were hiding
something, but I was
pretty confident that his assumptions were wrong. If he had guessed
right, Todd was
probably nursing a
black eye right now.
“I think it’s
time we talked about you and Todd.”
I chewed my lip
while I waited for him to continue. It was better to let him talk
than to accidently give
something away. I
hated lying to my brother, and my stomach churned as the silence
stretched on. We
were close and,
apart from Jamie, he was my best friend. But there were some things
that would only hurt
him
if the truth came out;
my job was one of them.
“You’re not
going to say anything?” he asked.
“There’s nothing
to say.”
He sighed and ran a
hand through his hair.
“Before I left,
Todd asked me what time you’d be home tonight and said to get you
to call him.”
I
knew what that meant. Todd had a job for me after I got home from
Mom’s.
“Maybe he wants to
complain about what an ass you are and he knows I’m the only one
who
understands.”
“Come on, Ally.
I’m trying to have a serious conversation here.” He was
exasperated, and I knew I
couldn’t
joke my way out of this conversation. “I like Todd. He’s a great
guy. But he’s not boyfriend
material. Not for
you.”
“Zach—”
“No,
let me finish. You know what his business is. He sells
women
as sexual objects. He doesn’t respect
those girls. What
makes you think he’ll respect you or treat you better than them?”
I let out a breath,
hating what I was going to have to say. Lying to Zach was the only
part of my job I
detested. It was
obvious that he was only looking out for me like a big brother
should, so I made a snap
decision. Maybe it
was better for him to believe Todd and I were dating.
“Okay, fine. Todd
and I have a thing going.” The lie tasted like bile in my throat
but I was sure it tasted
better than the
truth would. “Don’t worry about it, though,” I added, seeing
his expression cloud over. “I’m
a big girl, and I
won’t let myself be treated like crap.”
“How long has it
being going on?”
I knew my brother
well enough to see that he was fighting to stay calm. To avoid piling
more lies on top of
each other, I had to
make Zach want to stop this conversation.
“Seriously? You
want all the details? Do you want me to tell you how big his cock is,
too?”
Zach grimaced.
“Okay, fine. But if I find out that he’s not treating you right,
I’m stepping in. I don’t care if
he is my best
friend. That guy will get the beating of his life.”
I reached over and
patted his hand. “Thanks, big bro, but I can handle myself.”
Zach nodded slightly
and turned to stare out the window. I took out my phone and sent Todd
a warning
text. It was only
fair.
Just a heads up.
Zach thinks we’re dating. Let him believe it, it’s easier than
the truth. Just watch
your back because
he’s not happy about it. A

Excerpt:
“Don’t
take this the wrong way, but why are we up here?” I wondered as I
glanced around the tree house.
“This
is where we were the first time I realized I wanted to kiss you,”
he said. “You were sitting right over there. I think we were
twelve, maybe thirteen. It was one of the last times we came up here.
Your hair was down. Usually, back then, you always wore it in a
ponytail. But it was down and you were drinking a bottle of lemonade.
You’d just gotten done shopping with Gabby at the mall. You were
telling me about all of the different flavors of lip gloss you
bought. I’d never cared about your lip gloss before. But that day,”
he said with a low laugh, “that was all I could think about. In
fact, that’s all I thought about for days. Maybe even years. I
wanted to taste every damn one of those flavors.”
“Really?”
I asked, unable to hide my surprise.
He
nodded. “Did you think you were the only one that wanted that
dare?”
I
scrunched up my face as I made my admission. “About that…The dare
wasn’t really Gabby’s idea.”
“Oh
yeah?” he asked, feigning surprise.
“Yeah.
It was probably pretty obvious, huh?”
He
shrugged but he was smiling. “That night, I just kept wishing that
I’d kissed you sooner. Because I knew in the morning you were
leaving. I was sure I’d never get the chance to kiss you again. But
here you are.”
“Here
I am,” I echoed.

EXCERPT:

“Why do you keep chasing after me,
Hunter?” I could tell how raw her throat must have been by the
scratch in her voice. I was thrown off by her question and it took
me a minute to formulate a response.
I didn’t answer her immediately
because I felt like everything, all the times we’d spent together,
all the smiles we’d shared and the tears that had fallen, and all
the years I wanted to share those types of moments with her in the
future hinged on my response. Why did I keep chasing after her? To
most, she was just another girl in small town who was struggling like
the rest of us in an attempt to find a place where she belonged in
this world. Most of those people weren’t lucky enough to know her
like I’d known her – they hadn’t talked to her, hadn’t been
shown the depths that existed within her. Much like the moon and
stars that hung above us tonight, Ellison was a light that wasn’t
easily contained. She burned bright enough to break through the
dense fog I’d walked in my entire life. Because of her, I’d
opened my eyes when I hadn’t even been aware they’d been closed –
and for that, I’d chase her forever.
Clearing my throat, I reached up and
pulled her hand from my cheek when I turned to look her in the eyes.
Speaking quietly, I confessed, “Because
you are a dream and someone once told me that if I had a dream, I
should chase it.” It was a simple explanation, but somehow I knew
Ellison would understand the honest weight of what I’d said.
Her eyes blinked slowly as she studied
my face and as usual, she did something unexpected. She laughed.
The corners of my lips turned up when I tried to suppress my grin.
Her laughter sounded fragile, as if something so tiny could come
along and break it apart - but it was there and my heart raced
against my chest to hear it.
“That is probably the strangest thing
I’ve heard you say yet.”
EXCERPT:
#2
(Because I couldn't pick just one)
Those must have been fighting words,
because the next thing she did was slam her hands against me with
such force it almost knocked the air out of my chest. I tried to
hold on, but when she took both my nipples between her fingers and
twisted, I released her in response to the pain.
“Fuck! Ellison, that shit hurt!”
“I know it did, that’s why I did
it. And you can expect that reaction from me every time you think
you’re going to overpower and force me to stay still when I don’t
want to!”
“Well, then fine!” I shoved my
chest out at her and held my arms out to my sides. “Go ahead and
rip them off then, El, because you can expect that I’m going to
hold you every day until you stop breathing!”
She looked at me like I was nuts. Her
voice was a whisper when she asked, “Why can’t you just go home?”
We stood staring at each other for a
few seconds. It was eerily quiet where we stood, almost as if the
birds and bugs had stopped to watch, curious to find out what would
happen between us.
We locked eyes and I walked up to her.
Grabbing her by her chin, I tilted her angry face up in my direction
and held on when she tried to pull away.
“I am home. Why can’t you just
accept it?”
