Of Fire and Roses by Danielle Belwater ~ Review!

Synopsis

Nate West’s mother is dead, his dad a lost cause. Anger has become a way of life, until he meets and falls in love with Cora Ewell. But Cora has a secret, one that could kill them both.

Nate moves from the big city to a small, forest town with his father after his mother’s tragic death. Alone and angry, Nate feels even more isolated by his father’s inability to communicate and relate to his only son in the wake of their loss.

Nate takes to the forest in an attempt to find some peace, but instead finds a beautiful girl with flaming red hair. But before he can speak with her, she vanishes. Unsure if the girl is a vision or real he searches desperately for her.

When Nate finally meets Cora, his world is turned upside down and inside out.

Dreams of his own death plague his sleep as old dark magic, hidden for centuries, resurfaces and has its sights clearly set on Nate.

 My Review
3.5 Stars

* Bookends received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review *

Of Fire and Roses is a Teen/ Young Adult Supernatural Romance about a teenage boy named Nate West. Nate's mother is recently deceased and he and his father's relationship is pretty much non existent. When Nates father takes a new job, Nate is forced to relocate to a new home 9 hours away. There he meets Josh who he instantly befriends and Cora who he instantly falls in love with. Long ago a curse was placed on Cora's family and Nate is plunged head first into a world full of the supernatural. Full of phenomena that he barely believes in much less knows how to deal with.

I have mixed feelings about this book. First let me tell you what I DID like about it and then I'll tell you what I DIDN"T.

LIKED
1. Of Fire and Roses was well written as far as the writing style and the amount of detail provided by the author. I liked that as a reader I never felt like I was being left in the dark.

2. The characters were well developed and thought out. I didn't just know what each character or their life was like now, I also got a brief history on just about each character in the book. This is so important and almost never done. It helps so much when it comes to readers connecting to and relating to CHARACTERS in the story.

3. The ending was pretty great. The story seemed to get better and better the farther you got into the book. Despite my 3.5 star rating, once you got towards the middle of the book and on it was pretty hard to put down.

Unfortunately, Now I must tell you what I
 DIDN'T LIKE
about this book

Basically it was only that things just seemed to happen very quickly in Of Fire and Roses. Too quickly for me. I didn't feel like there was enough build up. Nate catches a glimpse of Cora one day while running in the woods. By the time he catches up to her, he's in love. By the next day they are in a full blown romantic relationship. (Not sexual, just romantic) Too much, too soon. Cora tells Nate about her family's curse right away, even though he is little more than a stranger, and falls in love with him with little to no hesitation on her part, even though she knows there will be repercussions. And even after Nate finds out about the curse, which he claims to not believe in, he sticks around which doesn't seem to be typical teenage boy behavior to me. I wouldn't have walked in the other direction, I would have run. But that's just me, not Nate. His heart wants what his heart wants. The swiftness of it all just made the STORY hard for me to connect to.

In the end, I would like to point out that this book has gotten glowing reviews. Just because it wasn't for me doesn't mean that it won't be for you. This just one opinion out of many. I definitely think that if the synopsis grabs you, you should buy the book and form your own opinion.

Runes Series Books:

 EXCERPT

I pushed the matter of the witch aside for the rest of the day. After school, Torin dropped me off at the back our shop.

“Text me when you’re done,” he said.

The back door of the store dinged when I pushed it open. Mirage was our family shop. We did custom framing, but we also sold mirrors. Lots of mirrors. Big. Small. Runed and unruned frames. People didn’t notice them or if they did, they just assumed they were part of the designs.

Mom had hired an assistant before she left. Hawk. An Immortal. If Dad knew about him, he’d hit the roof. He didn’t like Asgardians as he liked to call Immortals and Valkyries yet he was married to Mom, a Valkyrie, and I was an Immortal. The irony was lost on him.

Hawk didn’t seem to be around, but Jared was with the one person I didn’t want to see, his wife Celine. The bubbly blonde could drive any sane person crazy with her smothering.

“Raine,” Jared said, waving me over. “How’s school?”

“Busy. Hey, Celine.”

“Oh, you poor dear.” Her beefy arms looped around me in a hug. She came up only to my chin and I had my backpack looped over my shoulder, which made our hug awkward. She stepped back and gripped my hands. “How’s your mother doing?”

“Better. She’ll be home soon.” Mom had left six weeks ago, so we’d come up with a reason for her sudden disappearance. She was officially undergoing treatment at a private institution for nervous breakdown. Dad’s illness had taken a toll on her.

“How are you coping, dear? How is your father doing?”

“Dad’s doing much better and, uh…” I tried to wiggle my hand from the woman’s, but her grip tightened. “I’m fine too.”

“Oh, how brave you are. First your father’s plane crush then the cancer and now your mother, it’s too much for someone so young to bear.” Tears rushed to her eyes.

I begged Jared with my eyes to rescue me. I had to deal with her when Dad disappeared, then when she learned he was ill and now.

“I was just telling Jared we should visit your mother. She’s been so good to us. She’s at PMI, right?”

“No, she’s at a private hospital in Portland and only family is allowed.” I finally freed my hands. “I’ll let her know you were asking about her.”

“Oh, that’s nice. As for you, young lady,” she peered at me, “I want you to know you can come to the house any time, okay? If you need anything, anything at all, call us. Do you have Jared’s cell phone number?”

“Yes, she does.” Jared practically dragged her out of the store. He came back with a sheepish expression. He ran his hand through his thinning hair. “Sorry about that. Celine has a big heart, but sometimes she gets carried away. So what can I do for you?”

“Dad wants a copy of this month’s inventory and tax forms.”

He chuckled. “The person to talk to is Hawk. Come on. He’s in the office.”

Hawk got to his feet. He was a tall man with coppery complexion, straight black hair, and brown eyes that seemed to never miss a thing. He also loved black suits. “Ms. Lorraine, this is a nice surprise.”

“Dad sent me to get a few things, Mr. Hawk.”

“Hawk. Sit, please.” He indicated the chair across from his. Jared excused himself.

“How’s your father doing?” Hawk asked. He kept the pleasantries short and soon shifted to business. An hour later, he’d explained inventory while I tried to keep up.

“Why are you telling me all this?” I finally asked.

He studied me as though trying to figure me out. I stared right back. Most Immortals I’d met were centuries old, so I tried to figure out how old he was. He could pass for a fifty-something Native American man.

“One day you’ll inherit this place, Ms. Cooper, so you should know how things are run. If you like, you could come to the shop and I can show you.”

Mom never liked me working at the store before. She’d said something about my being clumsy because of a few broken mirrors. Now I knew it had something to do with her customers. She hadn’t wanted me around Immortals. Of course, she hadn’t known about the Norns’ agenda.

“Okay. Until Mom comes back.” She’d be surprised. In a good away, I hoped.

He nodded without cracking a smile. “Every day?”

“No.” I laughed. “I have school and homework and… a life. Let’s start with three days a week. If I can stomach all the business jargons and whatnots, then I’ll add a day. If not, then I can say adios and convince myself I tried.” No, I wasn’t going to quit. I was broke. Mom had forgotten to put more money on my debit card before she left. “I get paid, right?”

“Of course. Ten dollars an hour,” he said.

Sweet. “When do I start?”

“Tomorrow. I can show you what you’ll be doing now.”

“Deal. And please call me Raine.” I leaned forward and offered him my hand, feeling more grownup than I’d felt an hour ago. I reached down for my backpack and got up. He stood too. I put the folder with the tax forms and inventory in my backpack, then left the office.

My eyes met with Andris’.

 ** My Review **

* Bookends received a free ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review *

Another 5 star gem from the amazingly talented, Ednah Walters!

The Runes series is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. Seeress picks up right where Grimnirs left off with Lorraine Cooper, Raine (with an E) to her friends, trying to navigate her way through this confusing yet exhilarating new life that she's found herself a part of. Last fall Raine was just an average high school student. Now, she's anything BUT average. She's the girlfriend of super sexy Valkyrie, Torin St. James, best friend to soul seer, Cora Jemison, acquaintance to Echo, the best Grimnir on Hel's roster, and she's also a powerful seeress destined to forsee the beginning of Ragnarok, the end of the world war between the gods and the evil giants.

You would think that life would be a breeze with all of that might, magic, and muscle in her corner but sadly...no. Someone is systematically killing off seeresses to get to her and Raine must figure out who it is before it's too late.

Seeress is a fantastic book that only gets better the further you get into it. I love the camaraderie, the family and friendship dynamics that are so prominent in this book. There is plenty of action and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat but even in the midst of fight scenes and the race against the clock, the love and friendship and family elements are so strong. It's also nice to have a leading (YA) female character that teens can look up to for a change. Raine is loyal and kind, brave, always there to help a friend and her relationship does not include sex or the pressure to have sex which I found refreshing. That doesn't mean there is no romance. There is plenty of steamy scenes to be had in Seeress. It truly includes something for everyone.

Seeress is a great addition to an equally great series and I for one can't wait to see what this author comes up with next!

Excerpt

As well-known as the plant is, it’s only known for its processing of MSW. The perfect cover. No one suspects that a lab is situated three levels below ground. Or that a body was brought back to life with a computer program down there. It bothers me. It's rare that anything bothers me when it comes to a mission. Or life in general. But this one is pricking at me. Curiosity rides me. Gage leans into the car to speak to his team right as one of the back doors of the facility opens. Several Japanese men and women in lab coats exit first. They stop, forming a semi-circle around the entrance and talking amongst themselves. Another black haired man in a lab coat, one that is not Japanese, exits last. I know who he is based on his file. That is Dr. Gordon Allen, the creator of the Sapphire AI. Brilliant, thirty-four years old, and almost no one knows that he’s recently defied God. Whatever the hell it is. He turns back to the door. For a few seconds, all I see is his back. Then, he shifts, enough for me to catch a glimpse of the smaller figure exiting the facility. My feet start moving the moment I do. The fuck if I know why. I’m supposed to wait by the vehicles along with the rest of my team until they lead the “cargo” to us. Gage calls out my name in a low tone. He’s clearly as surprised as I fucking am. I don’t do impulsive moves. Don’t do total loss of body control. I’m doing both right now. My feet eat up the distance in a matter of seconds. The Japanese doctors tense as I storm closer, but none of them try to stop me. For some damn reason, the only thing that matters at the moment is getting close enough to truly see the resurrected Ms. Heaton. I am man on a fucking mission. “When did you do this?” Dr. Allen asks her in a hushed, strained tone. He’s pointing at her long, dark brown hair. The ends were dyed a deep, navy blue. “How did you get the dye?” “I asked for it.” Her voice hits me. God, does it hit me. And I’m sure my reaction is due to the fact that I am ninety-nine percent sure who is talking, and my mind is too fixated on the oddness, the novelty of the situation. I stop right behind Dr. Allen. There’s a pounding rush of adrenaline coursing through me as my pulse fills my ears. “This… this…” Dr. Allen pauses in his stuttering, the movement of his head telling me he’s looking up and down at her. “You should have worn the other outfit.” “I… liked this one better,” she says in a small voice that mounts me, takes over, and reawakens a series of emotions that spring to life like rusty gears. I am not an unfeeling man. Not completely. Fuck no. But the emotions going through me make me feel like I’ve been in an emotional coma the majority of my life. She’s wearing a black button-down sweater, a navy blue school-girl skirt, black-and-white striped knee-highs, and light-brown commando boots that start right below her knee. She’s hugging a messenger bag to her chest, one with a pink-teddy bear on the front and the phrases Reality is a Prison and Sucker Punch beneath it. “This is all too different.” She doesn’t respond to Dr. Allen’s worried statement—she’s staring into my eyes. Looking right at me. That rush—that god damn rush hits me again, and I’m almost dizzy. Years of training are the only thing keeping me somewhat steady. Those big, duo-colored, gold-tinted eyes are wide, curious, and they’ve stolen every bit of processing power within my mind. Her pale skin turns pink and her lips fall open with a shuddering inhale. I can’t blink. I don’t move. Am I even fucking breathing?

Excerpt

Moving through the mass of people between them like the shark he was, he homed in. She didn’t see him until the last minute, her gasp audible when he reached her and slid an arm around her waist. She relaxed as soon as she recognized him, her lips curving up into a devastating grin, and he got the full effect of her done up for a night out. He’d never seen her wear makeup before, and he wouldn’t be able to say what she was wearing past lipstick. Whatever she’d done, it made her eyes appear all tilted and cat-like, emphasized her cheekbones and made his attention zero in on her lips. Her kissably soft lips. The sort of look that brought big men to their knees begging for a taste, and he was about as big as it got. He had to check himself to be sure he wasn’t standing there with his mouth open.
“Hey there, sexy. Looking for someone?” he asked with a smile, careful not to just haul her to him and kiss the life out of her. Patience, he needed patience. She’d turned up, after all.
“You made me jump!”
She tapped his arm, accusation stretched across her face. She was still smiling so he wasn’t worried that he’d scared her. Besides, it hadn’t escaped his noticed that she’d turned toward him within his hold or that her hand lingered on his upper arm after she slapped him. Bare inches separated their bodies before she turned to glance around the bar, just for a moment, but that was enough. His entire body tightened, lungs frozen on a breath while his body reacted in a predictably male way. Locking the reaction down before she could notice, he turned her toward the bar where the rest of the lads were.
“Sorry, sweet stuff, I’m just pleased to see you,” he said, maneuvering her in front of him. “Hey! Coming through. Move it aside.”
She shot him a look over her shoulder as the crowd in front parted like the Red Sea. “Really? So I don’t need to check your pockets for a gun then?”
He blinked at her teasing glance. Full-on rabbit in the headlights until she turned around to watch her footing. Fucking hell. Okay, he hadn’t expected that. Not at all. He knew she was sharp, she had to be working with players who liked to take the piss, but the flirtatious note was new. He liked it though. Hell, did he like it.
“Sweetheart, you can check out my pockets, and anything else, any time you like.”
They reached the bar, and he motioned to the selection of drinks already lined up. The lads went for the “order one of everything and drink until it was gone” approach, but he was more than happy to order anything else she wanted.
Selecting a glass of wine, she lifted it to her lips but paused before taking a sip, watching him over the rim. “Really now? I might just have to take you up on that offer.”
Holy shit.
Heat hit him in the groin. An intense conflagration that galvanized his entire body. To stop himself from reaching for her, he picked up another pint. If he didn’t do something, he’d kiss her senseless, and more, right there in front of the entire bar.
“We can do that. Later,” he murmured, and took a fortifying gulp of his drink.
Later. Crap. If he lasted that long.

Meet Mina:

Mina was born and raised in the East Farthing of Middle Earth (otherwise known as the Midlands, England) and spend her childhood learning all the sorts of things generally required of a professional adventurer. Able to ride, box, shoot, make and read maps, make chainmail and use a broadsword (with varying degrees of efficiency) she was disgusted to find that adventuring is not considered a suitable occupation these days.
So, instead of slaying dragons and hunting vampires and the like, Mina spends her days writing about hot shifters, government conspiracies and vampire lords with more than their fair share of RAWR. Turns out wanna-be adventurers have quite the turn of imagination after all…
(But she keeps that sword sharp, just in case the writing career is just a dream and she really *is* an adventurer.)
The boring part: A full time author and cover artist, Mina can usually be found hunched over a keyboard or graphics tablet, frantically trying to get the images and words in her head out and onto the screen before they drive her mad. She’s addicted to coffee and would like to be addicted to chocolate, but unfortunately chocolate dislikes her.
