Love, Lies, & The D.A. by Rebecca Rohman ~

Blurb

Jada McLean is about to get married in nine days, when she walks in on her fiancĂ© in a little more than a compromising position. Days later, she’s on a trip that she intends to be relaxing and a prelude to her fresh start, when she runs into the rude, obnoxious, but gorgeous Jonathan Kole.
Jonathan Kole is San Francisco’s newest District Attorney. When he finds himself deeply attracted to a stunning beauty, he has no idea that she’s about to get into BIG trouble with the law—and he’ll be the one presiding over her trial. To make matters worse, his father is the lawyer representing her in the high-profile case.
When a series of events force them together over New Year’s weekend, Jonathan’s feelings and ethics will come into question, while Jada comes to terms with the fact that she is falling for the man that will be responsible for attempting to put her behind bars… Little do they know, they're both about to fall into a whirlwind so deep, it will send both their lives spiraling out of control.

Excerpt:

 "Their First Meeting"
The pretty, young host escorts me to a table for two near a window with panoramic water vistas. Within minutes, a server takes my order. As my cafĂ© lattĂ© arrives, I can’t help but overhear a rude exchange between a man and his leggy blonde with the host that escorted me to my seat.
“Look, I reserved that exact seat yesterday,” he says.
“I apologize sir, but that seat is not available,” the host replies.
“Well, if you were doing your job in the first place, it would be available to me, wouldn’t it?”
“Sir, I’m sorry for the error, but it wasn’t written here. If you like, you can wait at the bar where I’ll be happy to serve you a complimentary beverage of your choice while you wait, or I can accommodate you at an available table now.”
I can’t help but look to see who this asshole is.
Everything about him smells of money. From the designer jeans that hug his ass, all the way to the Jaeger Reverso watch that graces his wrist. He’s hot—probably in his mid to late thirties, tall, broad shoulders, piercing grey eyes, and a head of black hair like I’ve never seen.
Ordinarily, I might have found him attractive, if only he would just shut up.
Everything he says to that poor young girl, who has tried so hard to rectify someone else’s mistake, pisses me off. He’s been nothing but rude and condescending. As I look up, my eyes land straight on his. Then I realize they’re all looking my way. I turn around to look behind me, but there is no one. Then it dawns on me that he’s arguing with the host about my seat.
My meal arrives. I mind my business, and I proceed to enjoy it. Before I know it, I see him approaching my table. I pretend not to notice and focus all my attention on my lemon ricotta pancakes before me, but within seconds, he stands beside me.
“Excuse me, my name is Jonathan Kole. Would you mind terribly if you were seated elsewhere?”
My eyes travel across my pancakes to his broad thighs, to his crotch, and to what I suspect is an extremely trimmed stomach beyond his black ribbed sweater. Then I stare into his grey eyes in silence.
“You see, my girlfriend and I met right here at this table a year ago, and I wanted to propose to her.
Here. Today.”
“Actually, Jonathan, I do mind. Seeing that I’m enjoying my meal, surely you wouldn’t mind waiting until I’m done. Or perhaps you can let that polite host, who has done everything possible to accommodate you, have you seated elsewhere.”
“Do you have any idea who I am?” he asks.
Asshole! Your name might sound familiar but who cares…
“No. You could be the king of England and I wouldn’t give a damn.”
“Who the hell do you think you are?”
“You really want to know?” I ask quietly.
He lowers his head slightly, as if he’s seriously interested.
“I am a woman who walked in on her fiancĂ© screwing her best friend one week before her wedding, so forgive me if I’m not in a sentimental mood.”
His mouth drops open at my response.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me, Mr. Kole, I’d really like to enjoy my brunch.”
His piercing grey eyes are glaring into mine. I know he’s angry. His temple pulsates as he stares at me. He walks away completely flushed.
I don’t care. Perhaps if he had been nicer to that host I would have considered his request. However, because he comes from money doesn’t give him the right to speak to people any which way he wishes.
I continue to enjoy my meal and notice him walking hand in hand to the bar with Malibu Barbie. Half an hour later, I ask for the check then purposely make him wait an additional five minutes before I leave.
On the way out, the host looks at me bright-eyed. “No one ever speaks to Mr. Kole that way, Miss McLean.”
“Well, it’s time someone taught him some manners,” I reply. I hand her a healthy tip, and I’m on my way.

 Guest Post by Rebecca Rohman

Love, Lies & The D.A.
I worked on this book for the last year and the whole time, I could hear my mentor’s voice in my head.
“Telling not showing,” she’d say, or “I’m not convinced… not feeling it here.”
With this book I pushed myself, and tried to blow everything I knew I was guilty of with my first book (at least during the writing phase), out the park. My aim was to make the reader and my mentor, laugh and cry. I want readers to feel happy and sad, and at times I want them to feel angry—I want them to experience what the characters feel.
I’ve always had the most difficult time being funny in my writing and it was something I really strived to do in certain parts of this book. I think I’ve succeeded—it’s up to bookworms out there to decide . I’m silly, I laugh at my own jokes and depending on my husband to tell me if something was funny or not in a romance novel, was a complete waste of time.
He always gave the same blah response, “It’s cute.”
Not necessarily what you want to hear when attempting to write a funny scene.
The scenes where I wanted to evoke tears were the most difficult however. I had to get myself in “the zone”. That meant privacy, quiet, soft or no music, then I’d put myself in my characters shoes and I’d imagine how they’d feel.
In some instances, it was as simple as going back to a sad time in my life, but in others, I used my own fears— how I thought I would react in a given situation to write those scenes. I thought if I felt what the characters did; it would translate to the readers too. When I found myself bawling while my fingertips scrambled across the keyboard, I truly believed I would succeed in roping the reader in.
My aim was to keep readers engaged from page one all the way to the very end. Love, Lies & The D.A. will take people through a myriad of emotions—from lighthearted moments, to intense situations, from close encounters to steamy love scenes. Readers will laugh, and they will cry. I hope they thoroughly enjoy the heartwarming and sometimes heart-wrenching journey that Jada and Jonathan go through as they turn through the pages of my book.

Waking The Pheonix by Lindsay Avalon ~ Cover Reveal!!

 Waking the Phoenix
By Lindsay Avalon

A Mythrian Realm Book #2

Book 1 Breaking the Nexus will be on sale March 3rd and 4th only $0.99!!

Breaking the Nexus –
Chapter 1:

Death stalked his dreams. It shouldn’t have shocked him, not after his years as a homicide detective. But this time, something was different. It hadn’t been the grisly murder-suicide from the night before, though he’d expected those deaths to haunt his dreams. A young mother, barely twenty, had killed her baby daughter then herself. No, he corrected himself, she had shredded that poor little girl before slitting her own throat. No one could explain what had turned a seemingly happy young woman into a brutal murderer, but the images of wading through the river of blood had tormented him as he’d headed home from the precinct.
That would have been horrific enough. But this? This was something he never could have imagined.
Disjointed images bombarded him, nightmarish scenes of battles between creatures that couldn’t exist. Cries of pain and fear reverberated through a forest of strange, twisting trees, nearly drowning out the clash of steel, the sickening crunch of bones breaking, the wet ripping of flesh giving way.
What the hell was going on?
Connor Flynn considered himself a practical man. Having worked too many gruesome crime scenes over the years, it wasn’t unusual for his dreams to be twisted. Yet he couldn’t remember a single instance when his mind had conjured up anything like this.
The beings locked in battle were illuminated by flashes of brilliant color light, seeming to originate from something that looked human, but couldn’t be. No human could produce such effects outside of movie magic, not even his Wiccan sister. That had to be it, This was a movie. What else explained the hulking beast attacking the two figures? One was definitely female, the other male.
Another crash shook the ground beneath Connor’s feet and he watched as the woman, her golden hair streaked with blue, turned to shout at the man in a strange language. Panic coated her voice, her vivid blue eyes wild with terror. And determination, Connor realized. His body inexplicable strained toward her, every fiber of his being wanting to offer aid to them but he was held in place by invisible bonds.
Before him, the air seemed to part, flashing symbols glowing faintly. The woman was oblivious to the new danger behind her and he opened his mouth to shout a warning.
The words died on his tongue as once more the earth heaved beneath him, tossing him to the ground as little more than a rag doll. Pain exploded as his head struck something sharp and his vision dimmed. His eyes swept the ravaged landscape for the woman, but all he could see was devastation. More figures flooded into the clearing moments before Connor gave up the battle to stay conscious.
He awoke with a start, sweat coating his body, his chest heaving as if he’d just run a marathon. His head throbbed and he reached up, tentatively running his fingers across the area he had hit in his dream. What was he doing, he wondered. Of course there wasn’t anything there. It had been nothing more than a vivid nightmare. Wincing as he brushed a tender area near the back of his head, he stared in shock at the traces of blood on his fingertips.
Flinging the tangled sheets aside, he stumbled to the bathroom to splash cold water on his face. There was a perfectly logical explanation for that. He must’ve hit his head on the nightstand and his mind had inserted the pain into the dream. Yes, that was it. That made sense.
Yet, as he stared at his reflection in the mirror, his eyes bloodshot and weary, the dark stubble covering his jaw glistening with droplets of water, he couldn’t shake the image of the woman from his mind. Her fierce gaze as she fought against a beast that had easily been several times her size. Hands clenching into fists to stop the instinctive desire to reach for the memory, he shook his head. Before he could berate himself for a fool, his phone rang.
Bare feet padded across the floor and he dug through his pants, searching for the phone. Glancing at the display, he sighed. Dispatch. Despite Thanksgiving fast approaching, murder refused to take a vacation.

About Lindsay:

I am a wife, a programmer, and now an author. I have an adorable mini Schnauzer and more books than I have room for. I love reading romance because no matter what may be happening in my life, I can always count on my books to end happily ever after. The day I met my husband was the day I truly began believing in happily ever after. After hearing me complain a few too many times that I had "nothing" to read despite the hundreds of paperbacks scattered around the house, my husband began suggesting I write my own stories. When I finally took his advice I discovered that although I enjoy my day job as a software engineer, my true calling is to be an author.

My sister drilled into me an appreciation for fantasy and mythology, something I try to bring to my books. My debut novel, "Breaking the Nexus", started as a book written for NaNoWriMo and has grown to so much more. It was the conduit that introduced me to a fantastic group of independent authors who have changed my life in unimaginable ways.

When I'm not writing, I've found a passion for blogging and interviewing fellow authors. I also love reading (of course!), baking, crochet, sewing sock monkeys, playing video games, and all sorts of random crafts. I have an incurable love of rubber duckies and stuffed animals, and I believe nobody should have to grow up if they don't want.

Finding Destiny by Christa Simpson ~ Excerpt!!

Title: Finding Destiny

Author: Christa Simpson

Release date: February 13th, 2014

Genre: Steamy Contemporary Romance

Book Description:

Skylar has rules. He has never strayed from those rules. And yet Destiny has him breaking every last one of them.

Destiny was looking forward to a bit of solitude in the north. She figured surrounding herself with her two besties, at an expensive spa retreat, would beat away the winter blues. That was the plan. Destiny liked plans. But plans don’t always work out the way you want them to.

Skylar never expected to find three ladies trudging through the snow. But after finding them stranded, in the middle of nowhere, during the biggest snow storm of the year, he’s forced to invite Destiny and her friends back to his cabin. Though he tried to ignore what was subtly unravelling between them, he couldn’t discount their attraction. The way Destiny could read into his thoughts and the way his jealousy raged at the thought of his brother taking her to his bed, he knew he had better stake his claim.
But when tragedy strikes, torn from her arms at lightning speed, Skylar’s left to wonder whether he would ever find his destiny.

Book Excerpt:

Book Excerpt

After an embarrassing exchange of too much information, Destiny was relieved to hear that the headboard had finally stopped banging off the wall. It wasn’t very long after that when Felicia and Matty rejoined them, both with mischievous smiles on their faces.
Matty glanced at Felicia like she was a tasty treat that he had yet to sample. “Felicia and I have to go out for a few things. Can we get you guys anything?”
Natalie shuffled awkwardly to her feet, knocking the peas onto the old, untreated floorboards. “Yeah. My truck.”
Destiny watched how Natalie favored the wrong ankle. “Are you sure you should be standing on that?” It was supposed to be more of a tease, but Natalie didn’t get it.
Skylar smiled and glanced at the floor, having read Destiny’s sarcasm like it were written in his own baby book.
I just want to get my truck and get this weekend back on track. This was supposed to be our weekend, remember? And now all this has happened.”
The truth was that Natalie was only upset because there were two men there and not a single one of them were giving her the time of day.
Quit being such a party pooper. Matty says we can stay as long as we like.” Felicia gave Matty a naughty eye that said she would be happy to lock herself back in that bedroom with him for another round.
Well, I’m going,” Natalie insisted, turning her attention to Matty. “Skylar said you can fix my truck. Will you?”
Matty shrugged his shoulders, as Natalie pulled on her puffy white jacket. “I can certainly have a look. Trouble is, I only have my truck here. It’ll only fit three of us.” Then he glanced at Felicia. “Unless you want to sit on my lap, doll.”
Felicia smiled, but everyone else cringed. Those two were a perfect match for each other.
Destiny stood from the sofa. “Do you really think we could all fit?”
When Skylar mirrored her stance, she turned to face him. She could tell he had something important to say. She stared at his lips, just waiting for him to stop her. But she worried that he didn’t have it in him.
***
Skylar didn’t know why his pulse was now throbbing in his throat, but there was no way he could let Destiny walk out on him already. They had only just met. When she had stood from her seat, a sudden stab of realization had washed over him. He had to think of something quick.
You should stay.”
His offer had been charming, his voice soft, and the fact that he hadn’t heard the word no on her breath gave him hope.
I don’t know,” she answered, after a slight hesitation. The look on her face suggested she was unsure of what he was offering. “I don’t know,” she repeated, like she was overthinking it. “Nat, you probably need a doctor. I can come with you.”
Skylar knew that was an outright lie. What was she so scared of?
Matty stole Destiny’s attention. “Sorry to break it to you, Dee, but the nearest doctor is close to an hour away.” He turned toward Natalie to inform her of the situation, saving Skylar the trouble. “If it’s a doctor you need, Skylar’s the best alternative you’ve got. You’re better off lifting that foot up and taking it easy.”
That’s fine. I can do that at the spa we paid a small fortune to visit. It was non-refundable, by the way.” Natalie ignored Felicia’s disappointment, and glanced at Destiny as she zipped up her jacket. “If Felicia’s coming back out here, then you might as well hang out for a while.”
Are you sure, Nat?”
Yessss!” she stated, dramatically. “I’ll catch up with you guys later. You will be okay out here on your own, right?”
Skylar saw Destiny gulp when her eyes reached his. She would be very okay out there, if Skylar had anything to do with it. He raised his eyebrows in question. But he really wanted her to stay.
She turned back to Natalie. “I’ll be fine.”
A dragon took flight in Skylar’s chest from what her agreement insinuated. She wanted him just like he wanted her. With that knowledge, he grew more brave and moved closer to her.
He draped his arm over Destiny’s shoulder. “I’ll take good care of her.”
When Destiny leaned back to peer up at him, he caught his first glimpse of her angelic smile up close. Oh, God. Those lips. His gaze snared hers and he could see her innocence melting away. He wet his lips with a lick of his tongue, overcome with a desire to take her mouth against his. Her soft smile never left those perfect pink lips, telling him exactly what he needed to know. She liked what she saw.
Let’s leave those two love birds alone,” Matty teased. “Come on, ladies. Your chariot awaits.”
They all shuffled outside, leaving Destiny and Skylar very alone, his arm still carefully strung across her back.
Cutting the silence, and escaping the closeness that left him aching to touch her, Skylar retrieved his arm and headed for the kitchen. “Can I get you something to drink? Sorry I didn’t think to ask you sooner. I must have left my manners back at home. They don’t come in real handy around those guys.”
He watched Destiny swallow again. “I can imagine.”
Skylar pulled a couple of beers from the fridge and returned to the living room. “I don’t suppose you drink beer.” He twisted the top off the bottle and handed it to her.
Not really, but I could use one right about now.”
He chuckled as he twisted the cap off his own bottle and snapped the lid across the room. “Sorry. Old habits die hard.” He drew a long, slow gulp from the bottle, and he caught her watching his mouth.
It’s fine. This is your place. You can do whatever you want in it.”
That suggestion gave him unwholesome thoughts. He planned on finding out whether she would make good on that promise.
