Tainted Waters by Maggie Thom ~ Book Blitz!!

Tainted Waters

by

Maggie Thom

He didn’t commit suicide but who’s going to believe her...
Frustrated at being fired from her latest job and overwhelmed by her consolatory family, Sam decides to move to the family’s cabin at the lake. A place she hasn’t been since her dad committed suicide there twenty years before. Or did he? Snooping is something she’s good at but someone seems to be taking offence to her looking too closely at what has been happening at the lake. What she discovers is shocking. Now she must uncover what’s real and what’s not. All that she learned growing up, may be false. Keegan, who has recently moved to the area, to finish his latest book is also trying to find out if his grandfather, who’d passed away ten years before, died of natural causes or was murdered? The descendants of the four families who own the land around the lagoon are dying off. Since Sam and Keegan are the only ones questioning the deaths, they find themselves working together to seek the truth. Are people being murdered? Who would benefit from their deaths? Why would there be barricades and armed guards at the north end of the lake? To stay alive, Sam and Keegan must find the answers and convince others, before more people are killed... including them.

"Thom’s book was like one of my Nana’s triple layered chocolate cakes, impossible to walk away from without licking the plate."

Maggie Thom's Bio

Maggie Thom made the hard decision to freefall, leaving her successful, twenty year career in management, to follow her dream and passion to write full time. The leap has been adventurous and very enlightening. A long-time reader and writer, she was thrilled with the release of her first novel, Captured Lies in the fall of 2012 and her second novel, Tainted Waters released April 30th, 2013. She is busy writing her third novel, Deceitful Truths to be published late 2013 or early 2014. Having married her best friend, she is learning that humor, love and patience, help her navigate her way through her twins’ teen years.

“We have to report it.”
“And how are we going to say we found it. We just happened to be snooping ourselves when someone came and ransacked the place. Oh yeah and by the way he was wearing a black baseball cap and he had a great, no let me correct that, a verrrryyyyyy gooooooddddd body.”
“We don’t even know it was him. Why would he come back and rip the place apart. If he was looking for something, why not the first time he was here?” She glared at him as he grabbed her arm and pulled her outside. She jerked out of his grasp.
“Maybe it wasn’t him but that doesn’t mean I want to stick around and see if he comes back.”
“Just let me look around and see if I can tell what they took. You watch for vehicles.”
The mulish look on his face let her know he didn’t like the plan but he wasn’t going to stop her. She waited until he was in place watching the driveway, then she kicked off her shoes and entered. Books from the shelves were strewn about, some of them even ripped in half. Newspapers had been taken from her neat stack of recycling and were torn up, shredded. The couch had been flipped, the lamp overturned and the stuffing had been ripped out of the pillows. The place looked like a bunch of wild animals had been locked in and had gone berserk looking for food or a way out. The scene brought tears to her eyes. It just wasn’t right. Mrs. MacNeil never hurt anyone.
She stepped forward carefully trying to avoid any broken glass. She lifted some of the debris off the floor to see if there was anything under it. It sounded super noisy to her every time she moved. Every few seconds she was glancing over her shoulder to make sure that no one was there.
It didn’t make sense. All she could think was don’t let it be one of her children.
“Come on. Let’s get out of here. This isn’t worth it. Let’s go.”
With one last look around she reluctantly walked out the door, locking it behind her. Not caring that he saw her, she opened the panel under the deck and slid the spare key onto the hidden nail. Obviously someone had their own set anyway. That thought made her nervous. She only knew of a handful of people who had the key to that place.
“Your place or mine?”
It was too much to take in. She couldn’t respond she just headed off through the trees to the path. He followed but they continued on in silence, accompanied by the shrill tweets and chirps of birds as they headed to her family’s cabin. When they reached the end point of the lake, the path swung back towards the pond, allowing them a clear view for a short while. It made her think of her phone. It had vibrated earlier when they’d left Keegan’s and were walking along the lake. Curious as to who called, she pulled it out. There was a missed call and a text. They were from DD.
M :( u.
Sam knew that to mean Shelley was mad at her. Listening to her message she understood why. Taking a chance that DD still had the cell phone she quickly dialled her brother’s number.
“Asaaaaaaam. Asaaaaammmmmm. Aaaaaasssssaaaaaaaaaammmmmm.” DD started blubbering out stuff that Sam couldn’t understand.
“Ssssshhhh. Stop. Ssshhhh. I need you to stop.” Sam repeated this a few more times, speaking softly. DD finally snivelled, indicating she was calmer now.
“You sound funny. What’s up?”
“Cold.”
“You’re cold... oh you have a cold.” Oh no. No wonder Shelley had a bee in her butt.

“Mom’s mad. Said your fault. I can’t see you.” She started to cry, a loud wailing sound. Sam winced, sure that it would make things worse.

Book Excerpt

Mags? You okay?”
I slammed my eyes shut, quickly taking in a sharp breath, the burning wave of angry skin screaming to be rid of its permanent paint was incredibly discomforting, but tried to smile. “Yeah, why?”
He started to make his way to the kitchen. “Give me a second. I’ll make you feel better.” He came back into the living room, sitting on the couch with a cup of ice, hand soap, and paper towels. “Mags, come lie down,” He patted the cushion next to him as his gaze dipped to my tender hip bone, “I’m going to help that stinging stop.”
I did as instructed, unzipping my shorts and pulling up my shirt to expose the black bandage covering my raw inked skin. Walker was an absolute gentleman, to my surprise. It was not in Walker’s normal character to be good when a girl was half naked lying down in front of him. He removed the bandage and rubbed the cold ice on my angry skin to help the stinging cease, and the swelling to go down, then washed it and patted my tattooed side dry. I moaned with relief and I could see the lustful desire in his eyes while he listened to my groans of pleasure…

Excerpt

Aerie Daniels
There’s something deliciously perverse about staring through the clear glass. All of
my senses engage as I wait in line—the fragrance that fills the air as the fire crackles
beneath the foil wrapped treats wafts under my nose, the beauty in each and every small
package as they line the shelves with tiny dots and colored sprinkles mesmerizes me, the
sound made as the silver sheet is peeled back to reveal the magnificence it holds
captivates me, and the anticipation of the taste makes my mouth water. Ummm… just
thinking of the first bite into the moist brown exterior with its bittersweet Belgian
chocolate complimenting the flavor of the Madagascar bourbon vanilla that oozes from
its inside has me trembling. The black and white cupcake—it’s simply perfection.
Amidst the skyscrapers in Los Angeles’ South Park neighborhood, Sprinkles is a
gem tucked away for those of us who seek out a small piece of heaven. I don’t come here
often, but when I do it’s for that one special treat. The menu describes it as, “Yin and
Yang.” An ancient proverb that says, “Complementary opposites, such as light and dark,
day and night, and masculine and feminine, seemingly may exist as contrary forces, but
are actually interconnected.” Simply put, it says one gives rise to the other and it’s true—
opposites attract. Without the vanilla inside, one could not possibly crave the chocolate
outside—looking at the two parts united has me drooling.
“You know what they say about staring through the glass,” a deep husky voice says
from behind me.
His words tingle my skin and my gaze snaps up. “Excuse me?” I stop short, in a
daze, not even sure what he just said I was so lost in my thoughts.
He chuckles. “You know what they say about staring through the glass,” he repeats.
My eyes blink and come into focus on the upward tilt of his full lips. Then my eyes
move to his smooth pale skin flecked with a light stubble, his nose seemingly sculpted
even with a slight imperfection in its slope, large eyes with the most unusual gray color
swirling from within, and chocolate brown colored hair framing his face in pieces—I’m
not sure if he has just rolled out of bed or if product molds it just so. Either way, he is
utterly beautiful.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Just be careful so you don’t fall in like Alice.” He smiles, displaying his bright
white teeth.
“Again, I’m sorry but I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I notice his eyes
sweep over me and my heart starts pounding.
“Through the Looking Glass,” he responds in a dangerously husky voice.
This time when he speaks I catch an accent, ever so slight but extremely sexy.
It reminds me of how Robert De Nero talks, just not as loud or fast. I continue to stare,
unable to respond. I notice that his physique is long and lean. He’s dressed in worn jeans
that fit him perfectly. His orange laced hiking boots scream I don’t conform. A pair of
tortoiseshell sunglasses hang from the V of his gray sweater, which clings to his body
perfectly. And an outdoor vest tops the outfit. It throws me off. It makes him look more
like an Abercrombie model than a James Dean type. It’s a navy blue down and quilted
one with a silver zipper. I don’t know why, but something about his outfit, about this
man, captivates me.
“Number 98,” calls the girl from behind the counter.
He steps closer. His warm breath whispers across my neck. “Through the Looking
Glass is the sequel to Alice in Wonderland. When Alice gets too close to the glass, she
falls in and starts on a crazy journey,” he tells me as his arm waves in the air with a green
ticket on display. Stepping closer, his gaze cuts from mine to the glass case as he hands
his number to the clerk whose wearing a cute brown apron with the word Sprinkles
scripted across it.
“Can I have a dozen of the black and white cupcakes?” he asks.
Suddenly alarmed, my eyes dart to the case as I watch the single remaining row of
beautifully crafted cupcakes diminish until there are none left. My irritation flares as I
glance at my number—97.
The beautiful stranger hands the clerk his credit card and waits to sign the slip.
“I was number 97, my number was before yours,” I say as he’s handed the bag that
holds his treasure.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Here let me get the sales clerk’s attention so you don’t have to take
another number,” he says.
I want to stomp my feet. I want to scream. I don’t want her attention. I don’t want
another number. I want the cupcakes that he stole from me.
“Miss,” he calls draping his perfectly fit body over the case. She looks his way and
with a charming grin he says, “Can you help this lovely lady? She missed her number
being called.”
“Of course, I’m so sorry. How can I help you?” the girl asks averting her eyes from
the man who looks like he should be on the cover of GQ magazine, over to me.
He smiles at me with a face that belongs on a billboard. “Don’t fall in.”
I swear he’s goading me. But then he tips his chin and a sexy, smoldering grin passes
over his lips and I’m not so sure anymore. He turns to look at me one more time before
he exits, and excitement flushes over my face. I nod a slight cursory acknowledgement,
then he disappears and disappointment washes over me—he’s gone. Crap. The cupcakes
are also gone. Double crap. And now I’m left wondering if he saw me staring at that
flavor? Did he distract me on purpose so he could purchase them first? Urrr…I’m so
angry right now I consider walking out, but when the clerk asks me what I’d like I settle
for the Vanilla Milk Chocolate cakes—they are the mirror reflection of the black and
whites, with vanilla cake and chocolate frosting, but they are not nearly as good.

Book Excerpt

Excerpt of Love Me Not (Bad Boys Gone Good 2):

Jamie took a deep breath and sauntered out of the door. Stand on your mark. Take your
cue and...smile. "Everything ok?" she asked as she tidied the bar.
"Yes, but I was thinking, maybe I will take that dessert for later. I might get hungry back
at the hotel while I'm watching TV."
"Another Homeland marathon tonight?"
"No, tonight I'm watching...okay, you have to promise not to judge."
"Why, is tonight the porn marathon?"
"No. I mean, I appreciate a beautiful woman as much as the next guy, but I prefer my
women a little more...genuine."
"Fair enough," she said. "So what are you watching tonight?"
He took a deep breath. "Dancing with the Stars."
Jamie laughed so hard the couple at Lisa's table turned to look at her, and so did Lisa.
"You promised not to judge!" He pointed an accusatory finger at her.
"Actually, I'm pretty sure I didn't," she said. "And for the record, I'm not judging. I'm
just surprised. There has to be something on that fancy hotel cable of yours."
"I'm not watching the show for pleasure. Though if I were, I'm man enough to own up
to it." His smile broadened. "My firm has a client who's interested in some major
television spots. I'm doing a little reconnaissance tonight."
"Sounds dangerous." She leaned in closer, lowering her voice to a husky whisper. "You
gonna be alright over there all by yourself with your creme brulee and Carrie Ann
Inaba?"
"A-ha! You do watch the show. Admit it!"
"I do not. I watch Castle on Monday nights and I usually end up catching the end of
Dancing with the Stars." She shrugged. "I remember things. I can't help it."
"Castle, huh? Great show. I watch it, too. In fact, I just happen to be planning this crazy
Castle watch party at my place next week    "
"You're hosting a Castle watch party in your hotel room? Even though it's not the
season opener or the season finale. You're just having a random, let's watch Castle get-
together, huh?"
"I'm a wild and crazy guy. What can I say?"
Jamie wondered if he had a switch that turned up the intensity of those eyes because
dammit if they weren't particularly hypnotic at the moment. She could barely tear her
gaze away from them. "You are indeed."
"I noticed that you don't work on Mondays, and I thought, since you like Castle and I
like Castle...why don't we just watch it together?"
Dammit. He'd done it. He'd ruined everything by asking her out, even if it was about
the lamest date request she'd had since high school. "I don't think that would be a good
idea."
"Before you turn me down, it's a pretty sweet deal. I'll supply the food and the drinks
and I'd wait on you. All you'd have to do is just show up."
Jamie watched his face, his eyes full of hope. Normally she had no problem turning
down patrons' romantic offers. But there was something about Miles Copeland that
made it far more difficult. She pressed her lips into a cordial smile. "I'm sorry, Miles,
but..."
"C'mon, Jamie. It'll be fun. I promise." He was adorable, despite the disappointment
lingering behind his eyes.
Just say it. Tell him why you can't. She opened her mouth, intending to explain Tahlia's
rule to him, but she clamped her mouth shut, her heart pounding. The words seemed so
final. She'd be officially pronouncing the end of their little game, and she wasn't ready
to do that. "I'm sorry, but I can't. Thank you for the offer, though." She bit her lip and
glanced away. "So, that dessert you wanted. How about the creme brulee? It's my
favorite."
